Chapter 17 Moving and Grooving

Going to the back of the van, I rummaged through my camping equipment to find my saw. I had an ax, a small folding saw, and a few other tools that I never used. I seldom bothered with a campfire, but I had the tools just in case. They didn’t take up any room. I also had snow chains that I’d never used and hoped not to. But they were there.

Taking my saw, I hurried back to Stella’s little beach. Pulling the log out of the sand, I propped one end on a rock and sawed off a portion. It took a while. The saw cut quickly, but the log was about a foot in diameter. My saw was only ten inches, and I had to rotate the wood a few times before I could cut all the way through.

This was a nearly pointless endeavor. I didn’t need the wood. And Stella probably didn’t have an attachment to it now. I was taking it because I had a nostalgic affection for it. This was where Stella had sat for a hundred and fifty years waiting for me and where she’d first had sex with me. As far as I knew, the first sex she’d ever had. Aside from her fantasies. And I guess I wanted the log as a memento.

I moved the rock and propped up the remainder of the log, and started cutting again. I took a section about the width of Stella’s hips from the spot I judged her to have lain across it a little while ago. What I took with me when I left was less than two feet long. Maybe a foot and a half. It wasn’t heavy. I felt good about having it.

Back at the campsite, Stella had taken off her dress, and she and Pussy had become invisible again, but I could hear them chatting quietly. They hadn’t started packing. There wasn’t much to do. I’d take care of it.

I stowed the saw, found a place for the log, and packed away anything I’d taken out for meals. There was just a little trash. I unplugged the van from the electrical outlet and put the cord away. That was all there was to it.

I double-checked the area, but there wasn’t anything else to do.

“Girls, we’re heading out. Let’s get in the van.”

It was time to go. Stella had been here long enough. The same way Pussy had been where she’d been killed by a car for way too long. We were moving on, and I needed to take Stella away.

I backed out of the campsite and headed for the park entrance. I hadn’t chosen a destination yet, but I wanted to get Stella away from here and get a new life started. Driving away was my version of the baptism that Stella asked for. A transition from an old life to a new one. I was ready to fully enter a new life with Pussy and Stella, living in my bus and traveling as a family, not as a loner.
